Mr. Prime Minister,

Aid to Pakistan Flood victims

The number of people suffering from the massive floods in Pakistan could exceed the combined total in three recent mega disasters - the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake - the United Nations said Monday
(To date it has crossed that total, according to current Pakistan government).

On Aug 13, according to UN update, United Nations agencies are racing against time and weather to reach as many of the 14 million people affected by the recent floods in Pakistan as they can amid warnings of fresh floods and more rain across much of the South Asian nation.
Ms. Byrs noted that 20 per cent of the almost $460 million requested by the UN and its partners to help Pakistan tackle the needs of flood-affected families has been received so far.

The total number of people affected in the three other large disasters that have hit in recent years is about 11 million - 5 million in the tsunami and 3 million in each of the earthquakes
Rescue workers have been unable to reach up to 600,000 people marooned in the province's Swat Valley. Bad weather has prevented helicopters from flying to the area, which is inaccessible by ground, he said.
'All these people are in very serious need of assistance, and we are highly concerned about their situation,'' said Maurizio Giuliano, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

There are numerous painful stories coming out of this disaster, one which struck the hearts of everyone was the plight of a surviving mother of 6 whos all 6 children were swept away in flood waters in front of her eyes.

We are running against time. There is dire need of providing clean drinking water, food, medicine shelter whereas the threat of outburst of diseases like malaria, cholera, diarrhoea is always looming.

UN agencies and aid groups say the response to the international appeal has been sluggish, warning of a second wave of death from disease with at least six million now dependent on humanitarian assistance to survive

UN special envoy for the disaster, Jean-Maurice Ripert, said Sunday that Pakistan will need billions of dollars more from international donors to recover from the floods, a daunting prospect at a time when the financial crisis has shrunk aid budgets in many countries. AP

International community in general but Canada specially has been very generous in stepping up to the humanitarian call each time.
Canadas contribution to Asian Tsunami in 2004 was $744 million.
In January 2010 Canadian response to Haiti Earthquake was $139 million.

Total $ aid to Haitian earthquake by all countries was more than $3 Billion according to http://www.reliefweb.int/fts.

Unfortunately so far Canadas has committed only $33 million, less than a quarter of aid sent to Haiti for a disaster many fold bigger than Haiti earthquake.

Unfortunately this time Canadian response has been very slow and far less than required to help victims of a disaster of this magnitude.

We, the undersigned, urge the world communities specially Canadian government and the leaders of political parties, and the members of parliament, to speed up the aid process and increase the amount of aid substantially to help re-establishing victims of Floods in Pakistan, which is one of the worst natural disasters history has seen.
