The Conservation of Pulau Hantu sign now
Since the mid 1970s, major land reclamation was undertaken on the Pulau Hantu to increase land area. This caused many of the coral reef organisms to be smothered by the reclamation. By 1986, most coral reefs in Singapore have lost up to 60-65\% of their live coral cover (Chou 2006; 2008). According to a new survey (Basu, 2005), half of the coral life around Pulau Hantu has died over a span of 18 months. Years of studies by the Department of Biological Sciences at NUS has shown that hard coral cover had dropped steadily due to sediments churned out by land reclamation and dredging of shipping channels. Despite the loss, over 200 species of hard corals can still be found in Singapore's waters. But these too may die soon, given the constant sedimentation problem (Basu, 2005). Furthermore, there are future developments planned by the government and companies for the Southern Islands to become a luxurious leisure destination. Under this development, land reclamation would have to be carried out close to Pulau Hantu, which would exacerbate the degradation of the corals (Sim, 2006). Therefore action needs to be done to conserve the reef to prevent our local heritage from disappearing.
Corals are important to us for several reasons:
Corals have medicinal purposes. Chemical compounds are found in corals, as well as in the organisms living on them. These compounds can be used to test for contaminants in developing drugs and vaccines. As such, the corals can help Singapore's thriving biomedical research industry. (Wild Singapore, Channel News Asia and Today Online)
Coral reefs are important to fishes and the fishing industry. This information will be useful when our group approaches the government to consider conserving the corals in Southern Islands as Singapore is also building a small but lucrative fish breeding industry. This is to promote the reliable supply of a variety of tropical food fish to local consumers, and help stabilise Singapore's fish supply and reduce dependence on food fish caught from the seas since this is not sustainable in the long term.
We, the undersigned, consider this to be a of utmost importance to Singapore.
