The Assassination of Lakshman Kadirgamar sign now

Kofi A. Annan, United Nations Secretary-General,
George W. Bush, United States President
Tony Blair, United Kingdom Prime Minister

August 18, 2005

US President George W. Bushs spokeswoman stated; We condemn this outrageous and barbaric act.

US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, stated; This senseless murder was a vicious act of terror, which the United States strongly condemns.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said his death was a; great loss.

Erik Solheim, leading Norwegian mediator, said the killing was; completely insane.

Russia described the assassination as a; barbarous act of terror as a result of which an outstanding statesman has perished.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar was a gentleman, a statesman and a man of integrity. He was a man of peace who transcended the ethnic divide. An Oxford-educated lawyer, he used his position and great intellect to seek an end to the conflict that has so tortured Sri Lanka. Kadirgamar paid for this service to his country with his life.

For more than a decade, Kadirgamar had used his position to warn the international community of the dangers of terrorism. While such atrocities were a Sri Lankan problem, they were content to ignore his vision of the future. Post-September 11, Madrid and London, an earlier lack of concerted action has transformed into tough legislation and a crackdown on the groups who seek to bring terror to the streets of Western capitals.

Foreign leaders and government were quick to issue condemnations against those who murdered Kadirgamar. But they continue to be somewhat slower in ensuring that fund raising in their countries, which supports the LTTEs terrorist activities, has been brought to a halt.

We look forward to leadership in ensuring that the funding and support base for the LTTE outside of Sri Lanka is now curtailed with the same sense of purpose shown in pursuing those who threaten the safety of western capitals.
