Support the Faculty of Gordon-Conwell sign now

Dear President and Trustees:

We, the undersigned students of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, have become aware of rumors about the unjust treatment of faculty members and about the future of the institution, and we wish to express our desire that the seminary remain an academically respected, evangelical, residential seminary based primarily in the Northeast. Furthermore, we request that the following changes be made in the policies of the institution:

(1) That there be more open and honest communication between the President, the trustees, and the students regarding the future of the institution. As students, we are making an investment in the institution with our tuition dollars and therefore have an interest in the academic viability and reputation of the institution.

(2) That faculty members be given more of a voice in the governance of the institution. Many faculty members are dissatisfied, among other reasons, because they sense that they have no control over the direction in which the seminary is headed, because the trustees and President ignore their persistent requests to be involved in the decision-making process, and because they feel overwhelmed by class sizes. The trustees have not, beginning with the election of the current President, made a good faith attempt to incorporate the expressed wishes of the faculty in their decisions about the future of the seminary.

We would like to remind the trustees that the students of Gordon-Conwell are here primarily because of our esteem for the faculty, and we would like to express our full support of them during this difficult time at the seminary.

Please act on the requests in this petition. We value our faculty members tremendously and want to ensure that they continue to stay at Gordon-Conwell. We also value the academic reputation of GCTS and do not want to see it decline.

I am outraged at the direction the seminary is going and concur that I am at this institution primarily because of the faculty. I do believe the board of trustees and current president of the seminary are undoing the years of hard work that Dr. Kaiser has

The Academy is fundamentally a medieval institution in it's inner workings and manner of being. It is not a business. To run it as such destroys the collegiality, freedom, and dialogue that make it what it is. Gordon-Conwell is part of the Academy. It oug

It's hard to get behind a movement I have no involvement in, but if our faculty are not getting the supoort they need, I will always side with the faculty in disputes of this kind.

As an alumnus, I have been dismayed at the manner in which major decisions affecting the direction of our seminary was made by the trustees and others apart from the faculty. Bottom line: It is the faculty that makes or breaks a seminary!

I do believe the seminary is headed in a dangerous direction; a direction which the majority of the faculty would guard against if they were allowed to have an effective opinion and voice in the matter.
