Stop War, Start Dialogue
WE, the anti war activists in the Diaspora and members of intellectual group living in the countries of the Horn, call on the international community to find peaceful resolution to the escalating tension between the Transitional Government of Somalia and the Islamic courts.

We are troubled that Somalia is becoming the epicenter of a political earthquake in the Horn of Africa as it was armed to the teeth by nations who consider themselves as friends to Somali warring factions. It is highly likely that a proxy war might erupt in which neighboring countries would fight their war inside Somalia. The border conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea is spilling over to Somalia, which has already been plagued by internal conflict based on anarchy and clan war.

In a recent report published by the UN, ten nations have been identified and accused of sending illicit military weapons to Somalia though most of them have denied the allegation. This means if war breaks out all the nations highlighted in the report, and many others currently operating underground, would take part in that war either directly or indirectly.

There is no doubt that the regional players like the regimes in Eritrea and Ethiopia would try to utilize the rift between the Transitional Government and the Islamic Courts Union to create regional instability in the hope of advancing their respective narrow political agendas. The international community must be mindful of this fact and interfere to ban these two parties from transporting their conflict into the larger region.

We also urge the United States to withdraw its proposal to the United Nations to deploy foreign troops to Somalia and to soften the arms embargo imposed on Somalia in 1992. Such a move would be a recipe' for a disastrous clash between the foreign troops supporting the weak transitional government and the Islamic clerics who control most of the Southern Somalia. That proposal would increase the chances of war in the region in which all the neighboring states would be sucked in.

Just imagine the human as well as material destruction this war will bring into the whole region. Sadly enough people in the Horn live below the poverty line, surviving with less than a dollar a day. It is quite horrible to think of the millions of dollars which will be spent in this senseless war while there are no functional health and educational facilities in countries of the region.

Just before you finish reading this petition, a woman would die in the rural areas from bleeding during delivery due to lack of adequate medical attention in her respective location; a child would die from diarrhoeal disease as a result of the consumption of polluted waters drawn from contaminated wells; or a whole family is drowning in floods as 1.8 million people in the horn are currently affected by floods. The entire situation of social service delivery systems is despondently out of shape if not non-existent.

With the insensitiveness and lack of concern of this grim background, the leaders of the Horn opted to forge enmity among the communities in their respective countries in an attempt to use the war as cover up of their political impotency to respond dynamically to the needs of the population. They were supposed to deliver basic human necessities to the people but they instead are fostering hostility and hatred in the entire region to perpetuate their staggering leadership.

Therefore we appeal to the international community to push for dialogue and reconciliation in the Horn of Africa. Peace is the only means through which the region can reach its objectives and goals. War only brings disaster of catastrophic scale to the masses residing in the area where the battle is raging on. Stop War. Start Dialogue.
