Stop Outsourcing New York Hotel Jobs sign now

Over 250 hotels within the New York City area represent approximately 63,000 hotel rooms. Making a conservative estimate that you need one reservation agent to sell and service every one hundred rooms you come with a figure of 630 reservation agents. Some of these jobs are being out-sourced out of state at less then half the labor cost. (A reservation agent working on property earns $18 an hour, while the off-site out-of-state agents earns from $8 to $12 an hour.)

Starwood Hotels & Resorts, which operates Sheraton, Westin and W Hotels, and the hotel chains Hilton, Marriott and Holiday Inn, all practice outsourcing to one degree or another. The outsourcing is easy to do from a technical aspect; the hotel operator simply transfers the caller to the off-site office. Unsuspecting callers believe they are speaking to an agent on property but are actually speaking to someone in Pennsylvania, Texas or New Jersey.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your viewpoint, hotels must still retain on-site agentsalbeit at reduced levelsto handle problems and paperwork that is simply impossible to handle off-siteyet!

We, the undersigned New Yorkers, having lost over 100,000 jobs because of 9/11 and the current economic slump, demand that hotels cease and desist from outsourcing anymore New York hotel reservation jobs out of state. While this outsourcing has only lost anywhere from 50 to 200 jobs over the last 5 years, any loss of New York jobs, no matter how small is unacceptable.

We also demand that our city and state elected officials enact legislation to reverse this trend or prevent further outsourcing. At the very least we would like to see legislation that makes it illegal for operators or hotel employees from knowingly or indirectly misrepresenting (lie) to guests that they are speaking to an on-site agent when they are not.

I ask that only New York State residents sign this petition.
