Save the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine and its historic Close sign now

An alert to the preservation community at large:

Under auspices of the Bishop of New York, Episcopal Church of the USA, ground clearing has begun for construction in Morningside Heights of a massive 20-story, 300-unit, for-profit "luxury" rental apartment building on the historic Close of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. The developer, AvalonBay Communities, Inc., has designed an immense glassed-wall structure rising 200 feet and stretching 240 feet along Cathedral Parkway from the Diocesan House to Morningside Drive. A 150-car garage will exit onto Cathedral Parkway. Commercial in both architectural mode and market rate target, the project will challenge the primacy of the Cathedral Church, dwarf and darken the distinguished Cathedral House, Deanery, Cathedral School, Diocesan House, Synod Hall, and overshadow the great lawn.

The Bishop's "Real Estate Project" further threatens to bring disturbance right up against the Cathedral Church's buttressed north side where Columbia University has signed an option to develop a block-long campus extension rivaling the height of the Cathedral Church itself [For the scale rendering of the project and photographs, see our webpages - http://www.geocities.com/SaveTheCathedral ].

We ask the National Trust to acknowledge the irreversible harm that such construction would do to the Cathedral and intervene to help its current leadership pursue less damaging fundraising strategies while the national historic preservation effort develops as it will new means of public support for our historic churches legacy. At this critical moment, we call upon your considerable influence to rescue, on behalf of generations ahead, the founders' 1892 vision of a "Cathedral worthy of a great city" the New World's most magnificent expression of the Western Gothic.

The failure of the Cathedral trustees to protect the site, coupled with the eagerness of Columbia University and commercial developers to take advantage of that failure, is disgraceful.
