Petition To Save Our Community Theatres

In order to save our Community theatres and theatre companies from extinction we hereby offer this petition seeking the attention of theatre lovers and citizens who understand the need for arts to flourish in our society!

In May of 2010 Artist Magnet LLC in conjunction with Wabi Sabi Productions Inc. , Art Mag Radio and Art Mag TV initiated a drive to help save our theatre spaces and our small to midsize theatre companies nationwide. This drive has been initially named THEATERS UNITED AGAINST EXTINCTION. The initial thrust of this effort is to bring attention to the current critical state of affairs in which many of our theatres and theatre companies find themselves. Additionally we wish to establish an advocacy group consisting of member theatres and theatre companies, theatre professionals, and well known theatre celebrities to form a united front to help change this state of affairs!

Artist Magnet LLC is the parent company of the International Theatre Networking website dedicated to bringing theatre into the 21st century. It represents about 6,000 supporters and members on the internet and support sites on Facebook. They continue to build their new home at Wabi Sabi Productions Inc. is a 501 c3 non-profit corporation devoted to encouraging the arts, theatre, and to educating and uplifting of the youth of our nation. Art Mag Radio (through Blog Talk Radio) and Art Mag TV are Internet radio and TV sites. Art Mag Radio Network is the host of four internet radio shows which includes Artist Magnet Radio(General theater and Artists), Joshuas House for Christian Artists, Rhythm and Rhyme show for our Emerging Artists worldwide of all Genres and our Hip Hop Dreams radio show for the Hip Hop Culture and youth. These shows provide an online stage for artists of all ages and genres. Art Mag Radio and Art Mag TV both sponsored by Wabi Sabi Productions Inc. are dedicated to different segments of the entertainment and arts community. Assisting in giving more Artists a voice and visibility. These entities are dedicated to promoting the arts and theatre through regularly scheduled shows which showcase theatre, music, and the artists who work hard to create entertainment art. Art Mag TV also provides a 24/7 video stage to artists to do the same.

On May 25, 2010 the theatre community lead by NYC Producer Woodie King Jr. (New Federal Theatre, The Wiz, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, and The Taking Of Miss Janie), Emmitt Thrower Producer (Wabi Sabi Productions Inc., Art Mag Radio and Art Mag TV), and David Mack CEO/Founder (Artist Magnet LLC) came together with several theatre companies nationwide for an online forum to discuss the issues surrounding this drive. Issues such as funding sources, producing affordable theatre, unused and underused performance and rehearsal space, art and art funding as it relates to governments, foundations and businesses, and the impact it presents on our communities small to midsize theatres and theatre companies from all these factors and more. It was a very spirited and sincere discussion.

Arising from this discussion were several things: FIRST it was decided to undertake this petition drive to demonstrate the publics true feelings about the potential loss of such National Treasures as our theatres and theatre companies and to urge government agencies, foundations, businesses, etc. to take a hard look at the problems which face these institutions. SECONDLY, we moved to form the group THEATERS UNITED AGAINST EXTINCTION and to form a Board Of Directors to guide this group. This Board will ultimately consist of about fifteen (15) members initially and will work together in deciding what directions this advocacy group shall take to accomplish our missions. THIRD, it was decided that Emmitt Thrower would lead this effort.

In conjunction with this initial discussion and formation, we are happy to announce that we have formed the Board and that we have the first eleven (11) members of this Board in place. The current membership of this Board includes representatives from: Wabi Sabi Productions Inc. (New York City), Art Mag Radio, Artist Magnet LLC, A. Michael Storm Productions Inc. (Florida), Eclectic Theatre Company (Los Angeles), Watts Village Theatre Company (Los Angeles), Celebration Theatre Company (Los Angeles), Looking Glass Theatre Company (New York City), Manhattan Theatre Source (New York City), New Federal Theatre (New York City), and Palm Beach Theatre Guild (Palm Beach, Florida). We soon will be adding one additional member from each Los Angeles and New York City and one from Chicago and one from Atlanta.

This current Board of Directors representing THEATERS UNITED AGAINST EXTINCTION hereby offer and sponsor this petition drive to alert the general public to the need to save our artistic theatre community nationwide. By signing this petition, the members of the public citizenry of the United States acknowledge the need to preserve the National Treasures which are our small and midsize theatres and theatre companies. Also by this signing they call upon our government agencies at all levels (i.e. National, State and Local) to act to help save these National Treasures and to preserve the arts and theatre for the generations alive today and for future generations. And to keep these theatres and theatre companies flourishing and offering diverse and creative entertainment and enlightenment to all the citizens of this nation and to our visitors from other nations. We also call upon Foundations across this nation to heighten their support for the arts and theatre in particular and to begin making their focus as much or more on small and midsize theatres and theatre companies as it is now on the larger and more well known theatres and companies. We also call upon our nations businesses to join in this effort and to help support our theatres and theatre companies both through donations, encouraging employees and customers alike to become supporters and theatre goers, and through business connections with individual theatres and theatre companies in their areas. And finally, by signing this petition, we call upon the general public to support our theatres and theatre companies both through contributions and through attendance. As the old saying goes, YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUVE GOT TILL ITS GONE.

These petitions will be circulated nationwide by volunteer efforts. Please sign our petitions and show your support for the arts and theatre in particular. Unite with us to save our theatres and theatre companies from extinction!

Thank You,

Emmitt Thrower
