Response to Dr. Fuder Announcement sign now

To the Administration and Board Members of Moody Theological Seminary,

The Student Council (StuCo) of Moody Theological Seminary (MTS) has recently been made aware of the decision to release Dr. John Fuder from his faculty position effective June 2011. With profound respect and unbroken conviction, we solicit you to repeal your determination based on the following:

Since the installation of Dr. Nyquist as President of Moody Bible Institute (MBI), Moody has greatly emphasized its educational uniqueness amongst other graduate schools and seminaries. President Nyquist rightly recognizes the enlarging extent globalization, urbanization, secularization, and pluralization will have (and is having) as Moody moves forward in training students for world evangelization. One of Moodys new commitments to biblically engage these forces was to intentionally train students to minister effectively in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-lingual, urban-oriented world. We recognize Dr. Fuder as a distinct embodiment of this vision for our seminary, serving in the very heart of a world-class city. We believe Dr. Fuders voice is absolutely essential for ministry in 21st century Chicago and we believe our Lord has placed him at Moody for such a time as this. We firmly believe that the loss of Dr. Fuders current position would cripple, not only the Urban Studies program, but also the practical education of every seminary student, as well as the Moody community at large.

StuCo would also like to highlight a couple areas of concern within MTS. The first area of concern deals with the recent MTS email announcement regarding Dr. Fuders status change within the seminary. This email seemed to imply that Dr. Fuders role within Moody was being upgraded and the Urban Studies program was receiving a facelift of some sort. We are aware, however, of the essential demotion of Dr. Fuders status and the seemingly dissolving Urban Studies department. As StuCo, we are disheartened, because the facts seem much different than what was implied. Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. -Eph. 4:25

The second area of concern pertains to the seeming contradictory actions by the administration in conjunction with current goals and visions Moody has established. The initiative of biblical mission and global vision has been conveyed multiple times throughout Dr. Nyquists tenure, most notably in his Inauguration Address 2009, Founders Week 2010, and Moody Theological Seminarys First Saturday 2010. As StuCo, we affirm this mission and vision. These have been clear in speech and on paper, so the decision to reduce Dr. Fuders position has left us bewildered. According to these specific pursuits, there should be strong consideration for the Urban Ministry program to be enhanced and expanded.

Finally, we would like to highlight Docs credentials and unique influence he has had at this Institute. Doc is a 16-year tenured professor, author, speaker, and insider to numerous ministries throughout the city and beyond. We do not need to list his extensive credentials since his life and influence speak for themselves. Doc teaches his classes with passion and fervor (Acts 18:25; Rom. 12:11), while providing students first-hand ministry experience in the laboratory of Chicago (James 1:22). His love for Jesus Christ and His Word is reflected in his love for students. He works hard (1 Cor. 15:10) and sacrificially invests himself (2 Cor. 12:15) on our behalf. We know he loves us. Every person affiliated with Moody Bible Institute would be blessed to take notes from Doc (Phil. 4:9) on what it means to live out the legacy of D.L. Moody. Doc is a true minister of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:11-6:10) who acts justly, loves mercy, and walks humbly with his God (Micah 6:8). Men like Dr. Fuder should be honored (1 Thess. 5:12-13). Mr. Moody himself would be proud of this servant. There is no reason, therefore, that Doc should even be considered for a downgrading of his current role at MTS.

On behalf of the MTS Student Council, and the affirming names listed through the link below, we humbly request the appropriate administration and board members of MBI to be transparent with their planning and announcements. Also, we would desire future announcements of this magnitude be given to students during a time when they have a fair chance to respond (versus the end of semester when many students have gone home). We strongly urge you to consider the leadership, influence in the city, and character of Dr. Fuder as you assess his role at Moody. Finally, for the sake of integrity, we ask that the mission and vision set forth by President Nyquist be taken into serious consideration when revisiting and contemplating Dr. Fuders tenure and D.L. Moodys passion for the city. In these financially difficult times, may we remember our God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19). As Doc usually prays to end his classes, May God bless the school that D.L. Moody founded.

Respectfully in Christ and for His glory,

The 2010-2011 MTS Student Council, and other supporters,

Jason LaLonde Micah McLellan
StuCo President VP; Treasurer
