Request for disciplinary action against the Columbia University students who assaulted Jim Gilchrist sign now

On October 4, the College Republicans at Columbia University hosted Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist. Rather than respect the rights of the College Republicans and Minuteman to express their opinions in an academic setting, a group of students rushed the stage in a violent manner and prevented Mr. Gilchrist from making his speech.

The spirit of academic freedom, as well as freedom of speech, requires that all views be allowed and encouraged to express themselves. We the undersigned hereby call on Columbia University to discipline the students involved in disrupting Mr. Gilchrist's speech by suspending the participants for a period of not less than six weeks, and expelling the leaders of the group, from all university activities.

This incident displays how poorly organized these events are at Columbia. Speakers should be protected from assault, regardless. Shameful.

Free speech means allowing those with whom you disagree to speak. You may make your own opinions known, but if you disrupt a speaker or rush the stage, you become the fascists you profess to fight against.

I always thought that freedom of speech was meant for everyone. By shouting down Mr. Gilcrest, these "students" (thugs) have proved that they are not mature enough to attend a university. Send them back to pre school to learn some manners, and the meaning

Maybe the University should relocate to 1930's appeasement-era Europe. That is where we are again!

This is ridiculous. Imagine them storming the stage to throw off a 'black' speaker or a 'latino' or a 'womens rights' speaker - Their behavior should not be tolerated.

What these students did under the cloak of free speech, was to not only embarrass themselves and their parents, but also Columbia University. Our country deserves better than this! Please expel each and every one of them for being such a disgrace to our n

Punishing these student thugs is the right thing to do because in the real world there are consequences to consider for our actions. Let their activism cost them something. The price of their freedom was not cheap and it was paid for by people like Jim Gl

Is collegiality dead at Columbia? Could it be that the IslamoNazi money coming through the door has pushed class out the window? What a shock!
