Repeal fines to get a stolen car back from the city. sign now

Dear James J. Laski, Chicagos City Clerk and all 50 Aldermen of the Chicago City council,

I recently had an automobile stolen from me and later retrieved by the Dolton police. I applaud the efforts of the policemen and policewomen who helped apprehend the suspect and return my property. Unfortunately, the city of Chicago wants an excess of $200 dollars from me to retrieve my car from its city pound on 103rd street.

As a victim of a crime, I do not believe it is fair to expect me to pay for this service on top of the taxes I already pay to support the city. The fines Im asked to pay are the fines that drivers who get their cars towed for illegally parking or acquiring too many tickets pay. In that case they are breaking the law and must pay a price. In my case I broke no law, yet am forced to pay the same fines.

I think this practice is unfair and that all victims of theft should not be charged to get their automobiles back from a city pound. In my case, my car is not valuable yet it runs well. The fine Im asked to pay is more than the car is worth. I find this situation deplorable and highly unfair to those without the wealth to own an expensive car which makes the fine look like a slight inconvenience.

Im asking the city to change its practices to allow victims of theft to not get charged hefty fines and to grant me my automobile as soon as possible. Ive opened this to a petition as Im certain Im not the only person who feels this way. Thank you for your time.

Michael Skallas
Chicago, IL.

My car was resently stolen. Don't think it would be fair if I get penalized for my car being stolen.
