Ramiro Aragуn Pйrez sign now

[INGLES/ENGLISH VERSION]

This petition is in regards to the recent abduction and torture of the Biologist Ramiro Aragуn Pйrez, who, along with two other young men, was caught up in the turmoil and political unrest following the crackdown on the teacher's strike in Oaxaca City.

Ramiro is a very devoted family man, and close to his parents and siblings. This is why perhaps the most disturbing allegation that we have heard was that his captors made threats to his family, saying that they knew where they lived; they also said that they would rape his wife when they found her. His two young children (ages 1 and 3) were born in the United States, and are US citizens.

Ramiro is a personal friend and colleague to many in the ornithological community here in the United States and Canada. He has been active in this community over the course of six years since he first arrived as an intern for the Alaska Bird Observatory in 2000. He has contributed his skills and provided an invaluable cross-border exchange of knowledge and ideas. He has also inspired some of us to visit and work with him in his home state of Oaxaca.

Ramiro has committed his life to the protection of birds and their habitats throughout the Americas, and most passionately in his home state of Oaxaca. He has worked on projects from Alaska to Texas in the United States, and continues his work in Oaxaca sharing his skills and dedication in the indigenous communities of the mountains north of Oaxaca City.

Ramiro is clearly a person who places high value on improving conditions in the world for both wildlife and human populations. We firmly believe that he is not guilty of the charges brought against him.

We ask that you publicly demand an investigation into the allegations of torture and abuse, that full consideration be given to the possibility that the charges are politically motivated, and that Ramiro Aragуn and others involved be given public and fair judicial treatment.
