Racist Comments by Star and Buc Wild sign now

We, the undersigned, submit this petition to express our disappointment and disgust at Clear Channel Radio, Power 99 (WUSL-FM) in Philadelphia, PA and Power 105.1 (WWPR-FM) in New York, NY for continuing to perpetuate the on-air atrocity that is the Star and Buc Wild morning show.

While doing the morning show for Power 99 on December 15, 2004, Star, aka Troi Torain, purported to do a comedy bit by placing a call to buy a particular product. When he learned that his call was being answered by a woman at a call center in India, he proceeded to berate and verbally abuse her by repeatedly calling her a bitch and a dirty rat-eater and telling her that he would "choke the eff out of her." All this while the Indian woman on the other line was only trying to do her job and take his order (which, incidentally, was for his "white" daughter). Buc Wild and others could be heard laughing in the background because, of course, being racist and demeaning is funny. Although Power 99 received numerous complaints, no on-air apology was made, and the alleged suspension of Star and Buc Wild was nothing more than pushing up the already-planned broadcast of a radiothon.

Power 105.1 in New York has hired Star and Buc Wild to host its morning show beginning January 14, 2005. Apparently, this incident did not alter its decision to employ one of the most offensive and degrading DJs ever to hit the airwaves. This decision has disappointed many fans of hip-hop music in the tri-state area.

Clear Channel, the parent company for both Power 99 and Power 105.1, meanwhile, has done absolutely nothing to assuage the loyal listeners of its radio stations all over the country that this type of racist behavior will not be tolerated. As the nation's largest radio operator, Clear Channel should take affirmative steps to ensure that its radio stations adhere to basic standards of decency in their on-air broadcasts. Demeaning an entire race of people in the name of "shock radio" is not acceptable.

This petition should not be interpreted merely as a group of people just not being able to take a joke. First and foremost, jokes should be funny. Star's bit with the Indian call center was not only painfully unfunny, it was blatantly and maliciously racist and demeaning. That kind of behavior should incur more severe consequences than a slap on the wrist.

We therefore demand on on-air apology by Star, and a written statement by Clear Channel condemning Star's actions. We also respectfully request that the FCC conduct an investigation into this matter and levy the appropriate fines. Such steps will go far in persuading those listeners who were deeply offended - who represent all races and creeds - that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.

I find such language used degrading to people of all color and that the sources of these remarks are from themselves members of a group who have been historically demonized. I am not sure freedom of speech means the freedom to be culturally insensitive.

This is outrageously disgusting. I hope that the FCC will proceed to remove these individuals at once from their jobs permanently.

I admit that I enjoy on-air playful banter and humor, even when at times it crosses into the unique characteristics or stereotypes of all our races in this world, BUT there is a line. Mr. Torain has crossed it with his ignorance and instead he spreads hat

I used to live in Philadelphia, and listen to Power 99. I will no longer listen to that (or any other) station when it promotes such despicably racist attitudes.
