County Legislator Debate in Rhinebeck sign now

As of September 12th according to the Rhinebeck Town Clerk's office, there are thirteen different times available in October at the Rhinebeck Town Hall for a candidates night/debate (potentially) there on county legislator issues between Ray Oberly (endorsed by Republican and Conservative parties) and myself (endorsed by Democratic and Working Families parties)-- the following ten different evenings and three different Saturday mornings in October:

-- all Tuesday evenings (Oct. 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th);

-- one Wednesday evening (Oct. 10th);

-- all Friday evenings (Oct. 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th);

-- three Saturday mornings (Oct. 13th, Oct. 20th, Oct. 27th).

I myself have repeatedly tried to reach Mr. Oberly by phone at Clinton Town Hall asking him to work with me to set up a debate in Rhinebeck-- leaving message after message for him (emailing him as well on this Aug. 29th)-- with no reply from him yet. I even asked him at the September Clinton Town Board meeting why he has chosen to respond to my calls and email on this; he refused to respond.

Hopefully at least Mr. Oberly will agree to debate me at the Clinton Business Association's candidates night Nov. 2nd at Clinton Town Hall-- which is great for Clinton residents (though a bit late in the campaign)-- but the people of Rhinebeck deserve better-- a debate between county legislator candidates in their own town.

Of course, Mr. Oberly and I shouldn't necessarily have to debate in Rhinebeck all of those thirteen different times listed above in October (though if he agreed I would actually do this)-- but the taxpayers of Rhinebeck do deserve to see the two of us debate at least once in October (preferably with a nonpartisan moderator, but if not then not).

The fact is that there are just too many issues crucial to Rhinebeck residents that our County Legislature votes on every month-- our taxes, our economy, our health care, our seniors, our education, our farmland, our open space, the water we drink, the air we breathe, our criminal justice system, and the very way we govern ourselves-- for such a debate not to take place.

Finally, speaking as a graduate of Bulkeley Middle School and a former Rhinebeck High School Student Body President (class of '81), I would also dare say that the youth of Rhinebeck end up shortchanged as well when they are prevented from being able to see such a debate in their own town.

If you agree, sign this petition-- for at least one debate in Rhinebeck this October between the county legislator candidates (pass it on).

Common sense demands it; fairness dictates it.

p.s. Just wondering aloud-- what exactly it is (my breath?) that seems to drive away my opponents year after year from debating me in Rhinebeck...Fact is that in the fall of 2003 then Co. Leg. Ed Haas refused to debate me in Rhinebeck (at Church of the Messiah; event was sponsored by The Citizen magazine and to be moderated by League of Women Voters)-- and two years ago in the fall of 2005 G.O.P. candidate Joan Carbonaro and Conservative candidate Bill Paroli, Jr. both refused to debate me in Rhinebeck (that event was at Village Hall with nonpartisan moderator and sponsor)...(why?...I don't bite!).
