Appeal to take firm action on those who perpetrated senseless and brutal murder of Dr. Divyendu Sinha sign now

Honorable New Jersey State Governor Chris Christie,
Honorable State Attorney General Paula T. Dow,
Honorable Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula,
Honorable Middlesex Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan,
Honorable Old Bridge Mayor James T. Phillips,

The Indian American Community is deeply saddened and outraged at the senseless and brutal murder of Indian American Dr. Divyendu Sinha on late friday, June 25th, 2010 in front of his helpless wife and two teenage sons by five teenagers at Old Bridge, New Jersey. This outrage is shared by Americans across the various cross sections who along with the community are at loss to understand the brutality of the crime. About 5000 people from all walks of life have visited a website set up to rally the community around the family of Dr. Sinha and demand justice for the family ( ) in just three days and great number of people have called into community radio programs about the murder and call for help to the family.

While the jury is still out on whether this was a hate crime, this brings memories of brutal attacks targeting Indian Americans during 1987- 1993. In one ghastly incident, members of a gang calling themselves вdot bustersв used bricks to bludgeon to death an Indian American man, Navroze Mody. During this period, homes of several Indian Americans were robbed and men beaten during the middle of the night. The community came together and with help of steps taken by State and local administrations stemmed the tide of violence. Again, five years ago, a woman from Holmdel named Geetha Angara was murdered in a water treatment plant in Totowa, New Jersey, ostensibly for professional jealousy. Till today the family of Dr. Geetha Angara has not gotten justice. This latest incident of brutal murder of Dr. Divyendu Sinha in front of his family is fanning the fear of insecurity among the community.

Words cannot express the shock the community feels at the brutality of this crime against a brilliant technocrat, a loving member of an ideal family, who was loved by friends and community as well as his students, colleagues and others. Dr. Divyendu was the sole bread winner of the family with two teenage sonsв his wife and two sons not only have to bear the loss but live with the memories of brutal attack on their loved one right in front of them as they tried helplessly to protect him. No matter to what community a victim of such a crime belongs, justice calls for an exemplary punishment for the assailants. Every possible assistance need to be provided to the family that is victimized by such brutal violence.

The Indian American community has largest presence in the NJ/NY/PA area. We have been strong contributors to the state economy with expertise in technology, medical sciences and business management, and are contributing to state employment through many established and start-up businesses. Increasingly many Indian Americans are contributing to public service as evidenced by their presence in state and local levels.

We request you to take every step to bring justice to the family and demand that the perpetrators of this gruesome crime be tried as adults. This will also serve as an effective deterrent for any future attacks. While the community is coming together to provide support to the family, I ask that steps be taken by the government to ensure adequate compensation to the family.

Thank you.
