Against the Censorship of Zahra Khazemi sign now

We, the undersigned, join with PEN Canada in calling on the council of the Montreal suburb of Cфte-St-Luc to reverse its attempt to restrict freedom of expression and allow the complete exhibit of photos by Canadian Zahra Kazemi to be displayed in the communitys library.

Five of 23 photographs by the late photojournalist were removed from a posthumous exhibition at the Cфte-St-Luc municipal library after complaints were lodged that they were pro-Palestinian. In response, Kazemis son, Stйphan Hachemi, said that the collection of photographs, which has appeared in Paris and other cities, should be displayed in its entirety or not at all.

Kazemi, who died while in the custody of Iranian security agents in 2003, was killed precisely for her commitment to bear witness to human tragedies, even when powerful forces want no witnesses to their brutality. She brought that commitment to countries across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, including Iran and Palestine. As her son said, suppressing such courageous work even after Kazemis horrific death is a violation of my mothers spirit.

We believe that freedom of expression is at the core of our democracy. When community leaders take the easy way out and respond to complaints by censoring material that some may find controversial, our whole society loses. Instead of the removing pictures someone that someone finds disagreeable, community leaders need to explain how our society is strengthened by allowing debate, discussion and the expression of diverse points of view.

Banning art sets a dangerous precedent, as it only encourages those around the world who wish to restrict freedom of expression. Moreover, libraries must naturally be centres for openness, discussion, debate and controversy. They are the very last places anyone should find censorship.

Re-mounting the Kazemis photo exhibition in its entirety would demonstrate that Canadians are committed to defending the principles of freedom of expression and a genuine diversity of views and opinion here at home. It would be a fitting, if modest, way to pay our respects to a brave woman who was killed because of her commitment to human rights.
