A plea for stores to stop carrying John Paul Pet products sign now

As your stores carry John Paul Pet toys and products, I would like to make you aware of a life-threatening experience that my dog experienced as a direct result of using one of these toys. My hope (and that of the undersigned) is that you as retailers will discontinue the sale of John Paul Pet toys until it is proven that they are safe for pets to play with.

Earlier this year, I was given a gift basket including many John Paul Pet toys (similar to the gift bag collections currently offered at Target, Amazon and Bed Bath & Beyond), one of which was the rubber "Boom-a-rang Flossing Toy with Dental Formula." Several weeks after my dog Chloe began playing with the toys, she became very sick in the middle of the night, losing her balance and throwing up blood repeatedly. A trip to the emergency room and X-rays showed that something was lodged in her abdomen, blocking the passage of her stomach and small intestines. Emergency surgery was performed to remove the obstruction, which was later shown to be a large chewed-up chunk of the boomerang toy.

I was shocked, because this is a very large toy designated as a flossing toy, which would denote that it is safe for dogs to chew on. However, my nine-pound Pomeranian mix was able to successfully eat and swallow part of it. When I called the company to complain, I was told that the toy is NOT meant to be chewed, only thrown and fetched. Their reasoning was that the material is like rawhide and if chewed long enough can be ingested. (Nowhere on the packaging is this explained, nor is proper warning given) I was appalled as the toy has no nutritional value, and I couldn't believe that the company was aware that it could be swallowed. A large toy with spikes on it should not be deemed as acceptable for an animal to swallow.

In the meantime, Chloe did not recover after the surgery. She was very weak, unable to keep any food down and was vomiting many times a day. The toy seemed to have completely torn up her insides. Our vet sent us to a specialist, who determined that more surgery would be necessary. Chloe then went through two more surgeries on her stomach, which was extremely taxing on her and put her through a lot of suffering. She also lost half of her body weight and was down to a skeletal four pounds when she finally returned home after her long stay in the animal hospital.

This was a four-month long ordeal that was absolute hell on both Chloe and me, and seeing her in extreme pain was just about the worst thing a pet owner can go through. Knowing it could have been avoided with more attention to safety and detail on the part of the toy company is unsatisfactory to me, and that's why I've taken action.

In closing, I ask that the "Boom-a-rang Flossing Toy with Dental Formula" and any gift collections inclduing this toy be removed from your shelves and no longer be made available to consumers at stores or shopping online. Ideally, you will stop carrying all John Paul Pet products until they make a demonstrated commitment to the safety of their target market. As pet owners and lovers, the safety of our pets is of utmost importance, and we hope that you will decide not to carry a product that has been proven to endanger our pets.
