Save Oriel Youth Wing's Provision From the WSCC Funding Cuts sign now

As the Advisory Group for Oriel Youth Wing that covers the Crawley SE locality, and on reading the proposals below, it is quite clear that if Oriel Youth Wing was to be the victim of this proposal and funding is reduced to Crawley Youth Centre - there will be NO West Sussex County Council youth service provision in the whole of Crawley East, which covers Maidenbower, Worth, Pound Hill South, Pound Hill North, Three Bridges and Northgate which in our mind is unacceptable.

As it currently stands Crawley NE and SE caters for approximately 2500 thousand young people - which would mean that if the Oriel Youth Wing provision, should it be decided as per the proposal to close and reduction to funding at Crawley Youth Centre, would not be available to these potentially vulnerable young people who have no other provision in their immediate area that they can come too. So what would happen to these young people and where would they go?

On the flip-side Crawley NW and Crawley SW cater for approximately 6,000 young people but the biggest difference is that these young people have a wide choice of options and can visit either Broadfield Youth Club, Thomas Bennett Youth Wing, Ifield Youth Wing, Dormans, Langley Green Youth Club, Bewbush Youth Club, Ifield West Youth Club and St Albans Youth Club - which is a huge provision that takes up the majority of funding across Crawley.

Therefore it seems ludicrous to have no provision in Crawley SE to capture these young people and
why concentrate the youth provision on just one side of the borough?

The young people of Crawley SE & NE have to have somewhere to go and for most the ability to get to Oriel Youth Wing is a lot easier than having to find a way of getting across to the other side of town.

You may recall that the youth provision that ran from Hazelwick (The Link) was shut down and never re-opened. Plus, the provision that was going to be provided at Northgate was stopped because of the recent cuts. Therefore it appears that every youth provision for our area is taken away and if Oriel Youth Wing is going to join this sorry state of affairs - what our young people of this area going to do?

Also as you are aware Oriel Youth Wing provides a wide-range of activities for all young people, some of whom do travel out of their own catchment area by their choice because of the excellent service that the team at Oriel Youth Wing provide - which is testament in itself to keep Oriel Youth Wing and not put it at risk.

To give you an example of some of the things that Oriel Youth Wing provide, I have listed these below:

Generic Provision - Senior Night Yr10+ and Inters Night Yr 8 & 9, Singing Group, Babysitting Training, Volunteer and Mentor Training.

Targeted Provision - Knowing Me Knowing You (Crawley-wide Peer Mentoring Scheme), South East Locality Youth Forum, Girls Can Do, Music Mentoring and Peer Mentoring.

Without this outlet for our young people - where would they go?
